5 Things to Consider Before Choosing an Agency

Picking a marketing agency sounds easy, but it can prove difficult to a lot of businesses. So many dilemmas, questions and comparisons. It’s a tiring but vitally important process handpicking your agency, considering their team will be driving your business forward and become your strategic partner.

To make your life easier, we’ve put together five key points to consider before choosing your next agency.

Are they full-service or skill-specific?

Depending on what you’re looking for, you can opt for a full-service agency or something more tailored. There’s plenty of niche agencies out there or an eclectic mix of full-service agencies.

If you’re looking for access to a multitude of services and a 360-degree approach to your marketing strategy, then perhaps a full-service agency is for you. Or, if you’re trying to pinpoint just one service, like social media, then you’re better off going with a niche agency.

Reviews and testimonials?

What’s the first thing you do before you shop somewhere new? Likely it’s to read a handful of reviews. Did you know according to Spiegel Research Centre, 95% of shoppers read online reviews before making a purchase? When finding your digital agency, of course you should browse reviews first. Consider checking Google, Trustpilot or look through their testimonials from previous work. It’s always good to get a feel for the company first.

Do they work for your competitors?

This is a big one. Does the agency you’re thinking of engaging work with your competitors? If they do, it is probably not a good idea to get involved. Whilst confidentiality agreements could be made, ultimately, it’s a risky move with your marketing strategy. Why would you want to think of ways to compete as your competitor does the same to you with the same people? It’ll rupture your plans and prove complicated in the long term.

How well connected are they?

Partnerships and connections within the digital world are becoming evermore important. They grant their clients access to exclusive and forward-thinking services. Not every agency has strong partnerships so appreciate the ones that do. Usually growing agencies will partner with services/platforms they use to help expand.

However, when it comes to connections, we are talking about the team you work with too. Will you have a dedicated account manager and regular meetings? These are all good signs of an agency that has your best interests at heart.

Regular reports?

You’re looking to achieve results from working with this new agency you’ve hired. How do you know if you have results? Reporting. Regular, personalised and in-depth reporting.

You should receive a form of report consistently measuring against your KPI’s (key performance indicators), yearly targets and what’s going to be done next to move forward. Reporting is the only way, as many agencies know, you can truly see how the work is paying off. And if it isn’t paying off, it highlights and emphasises areas the money can be re-invested to prove more effective.
